Apple is said to be planning to reduce the reliance of the upcoming version of its smartwatch, likely to be called Apple Watch 3, on iPhones. According to a report in Bloomberg, “Apple Inc. is planning to release a version of its smartwatch later this year that can connect directly to cellular networks, a move designed to reduce the device’s reliance on the iPhone, people familiar with the matter said.”

The current versions of Apple Watch require users to sync it wireless with their iPhones to stream music, send messages and more while on the go. To cut this reliance, Apple is said to be adding LTE chips to its upcoming smartwatches. This will reportedly help Apple Watch models to conduct many tasks without an iPhone in range.

The report says that Apple has roped in the chip giant Intel to provide LTE chips for these smartwatches. The Bloomberg report also terms it a big win for the US-based chipmaker which it says “has been trying for years to get its components into more Apple mobile devices.” Last year, Intel won a deal to supply cellular modems to Apple for some of its iPhone 7 smartphones.

US-based Qualcomm has been one of the key modem supplier for Apple. However, earlier this year Qualcomm sued Apple claiming that the iPhone maker infringed on six of its patents. These patents are said to include the technology that help improve iPhones’ battery life.

According to the Bloomberg report, Apple Watch 3 models with LTE capability are “planned for release by the end of the year.”

Apple launched Apple Watch Series 2 i September last year, during the unveiling of iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus samrtphones. This year too, the new smartwatches may launch alongside the 2018 edition of iPhones in September.

Taking about Apple Watch at the company’s recent earnings call, Apple CEO Tim Cook said that the sales of the wearable device were up 50% in the June quarter. He also claimed that Apple Watch is the No. 1 smartwatch in the world by a huge margin.

The company, however, refused to share any sales number for its smartwatch.
